You are invited to share your experience and knowledge with others by presenting papers or posters in suitable sessions. However, we have only limited time and space that forces us to select only some papers. Please mail your abstract or full paper to us as soon as possible so that we can slot your presentation in the program.

The Organizing Committee of WPOSE is trying to encourage as much of interaction of the participants as possible. This allows us to get more benefits from the event. We therefore set six different types of activities, i.e opening, conferences (seminars), meetings, poster. exhibition, bench-marking field trip and golf tournament.

In the opening session, the global situation of palm oil industry will be highlighted by a resourceful person (Mr. Derom Bangun, Executive Director of IPOA). Some critical issues will be elaborated. This will lead the forum to attend to the opening address. Invited eminent speakers will deliver oral presentation on respective topics in the conferences/seminars . There will be five conferences in day one and three. Each speaker will be given 20 minutes to speak and followed by discussion.

The meetings are set up to promote interactive discussion. There will be seven plenary panel meetings with different resource persons to cover different topics. The participants are to be actively involved by posing questions and views.

Meeting 1 - Business to Government: Fast growing palm oil industry in Indonesia : Strategizing future development . The meeting will start with presentation from Indonesian Palm Oil Board (IPOB) on the development program of palm oil industry in Indonesia . There will be 8 panelists to discuss the topic. The meeting will cover a number of open-end questions or thematic subjects. They include:

  1. The land is the limit – how much left?
  2. Going east – from Sumatra to Kalimantan then to Papua. What lessons have we learned?
  3. How to improve the productivity of smallholders' plantations?
  4. National plantation productivity in question. Is there any vision?
  5. How to transform the biggest oil palm grower to the main player of the industry?
  6. Investing in Indonesia : How to promote?
  7. Legitimate seeds: supply, demand and regulation
  8. Revitalisation of agriculture: the progress in palm oil

Meeting 2 - Business to Business: Promoting investment in palm oil industry . This is the forum for panelists (bankers, investors and business operators and entrepreneurs) to talk about current issues and regulation on investment in palm oil industry, to share experiences on financing the industry, and to view future trend of opportunity and challenges. The open-end questions or thematic subjects are:

  1. What are the main factors in making decision in investing palm oil industry?
  2. Success and failure in investing in palm oil industry – what are the reasons?
  3. Would sustainable issues discriminate the allocation of funding?
  4. Smallholders – Are they getting enough support?
  5. Government (central and local) policies to promote investment.
  6. What are (will) the impacts of global economy recession on investment particularly in palm oil

Meeting 3 - B to R&D Meeting: Future direction of R&D. Leaders of R&D institutions working on palm oil will be invited to the panel. This is the opportunity to discuss strategic research needed to support the development of palm oil industry in the future (5 to 10 years) and to get more support for palm oil R&D from the industry and governments. Some of the open-end questions or thematic subjects are:

1. What are the strategic research areas in the future (5 to 10 years)?
2. Blue sky research – who would do that?
3. Should each company have its own R&D?
4. Empowering palm oil: Is it now the right time to make a significant increase of investment in R&D?     How much?

Meeting 4 – Business to Business: Producing and selling certified sustainable palm oil: cost and benefits. The meeting will provide a forum to discuss the progress on RSPO effort in making certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) available in the market, the difficulties, costs and benefits associated in producing and trading of CSPO, and to view (5 to 10 years) the market size and price of CSPO. Some of the subjects to be covered are:

  1. Market and price outlook of CSPO – How much in the next 5 years?
  2. Additional costs in production and trading of CSPO - how much?
  3. Smallholders – Are they the losers? Who would help them?
  4. Producing countries – Are they mostly ready?
  5. Projecting the competition of other certified sustainable vegetable oils. 

Meeting 5 – Business to Business: Promoting palm oil trading. This meeting is to provide a forum for the producers, buyers and brokers to discuss current issues and regulation in trading of palm oil and its derivates and to share views on how to promote the trading. The forum is also to provide opportunity to the participants to establish contacts and network.

The subjects to be covered include:

  1. Impacts of high price of palm oil on the trading
  2. Impacts of regulation on the use of double hale liners for palm oil shipment
  3. How sustainable palm oil would change the current palm oil trading?
  4. Impacts of flexibility of palm oil for food and fuel on continuity of supply for loyal buyers
  5. Impacts of the changing in export tax of palm oil and its derivates in Indonesia on international market
  6. How the market in China and India to react to the availability of SPO?
  7. How big is (and will be) the market in China and India ?
  8. Shifting the trading determination factor of palm oil to China or India .
